THE SPANISH VILLAGE BY THE SEA WITH A BIG HEART

San Clemente Churches will join forces with local service organizations and the City of San Clemente for a unique experience called LOVE SAN CLEMENTE.  Event founder Holland Davis, Pastor of Calvary Chapel San Clemente states, “Love San Clemente is about showing God’s love in practical ways.  We look for ways to partner with the City of San Clemente and service organizations like Family Assistance Ministries, Community Resource Center, California Parks and Recreation and the San Clemente Community Development Department to love bomb the city through projects like weeding between buildings, painting, building fences, cleaning beaches or collecting food. In year’s past we were able to replaced refrigerators and ovens for Shorecliff’s Elementary School’s Home Economics class.  We’ve cleaned out areas for the city, cared for the poor and elderly and completed some major cleaning projects for the city.  I figured we saved the city thousands of dollars in man hours alone.”

Dates for Love San Clemente are July 9 – 13.  Love San Clemente will begin with a food drive where local San Clemente residents will be given an empty grocery bag supplied by local grocers.  Residents are encouraged to fill their bags with non-perishable items that will be picked up July 12 in the morning.

Former Mayor Jim Evert is quoted as saying, “we are fortunate to have an abundance of caring, committed people living here in San Clemente.  We are most grateful for your hard work and showing such passion for San Clemente.  The labor, services, supplies and “love” you provided to our community are priceless.”

Now in it’s third year, Love San Clemente gathers around 200 volunteers from a number of local churches and concerned citizen groups.  This year’s projects include working with the Pregnancy Resource Center, Victory House, Family Assistance Ministries, San Clemente Community Development Department, Gilchrist House, Las Palmas Elementary School and Vista Del Mar Elementary School.  Love San Clemente is looking for corporate sponsors to donate 100 backpacks so we can fill them for students that come from low-income families.  One special project will involve helping with simple repairs and clean up for a retired World War 2 Veteran.  Organizer Holland Davis says, “My dad was a Marine and I know the sacrifices that our military soldiers and their families make.  It’s a blessing to give back to them in such a personal way.”

The San Clemente churches with participating volunteers include Cornerstone Community Church, San Clemente Presbyterian, Southcoast Church International, The Shoreline Church, Lighthouse Christian Fellowship and Calvary Chapel San Clemente.  Participants will be wearing a Love San Clemente t-shirt with a logo designed by Madison Davis, a free-lance designer who works with Billabong and has had designs featured in the Sports Illustrated, Free People and Novella Royalle.

“We began with a simple dream to do something that would impact our city.  A lot of churches do things, but no one ever hears about it.  We want to do something that will make a difference and cause people to ask, why are you guys doing this?  Our answer is to say to show the love of God in practical ways.”

Pastor Holland Davis, Calvary Chapel San Clemente

“One of the great privileges of the Church is to care for it’s community and not just it’s own people.  We want this community to know that we love our city and the Church is bigger than our four walls.”

Chris Smith, Southcoast Church International

This is a wonderful opportunity to be involved in the community. I have spoken with so many people who want to do service work but just cannot commit to long term projects. Love San Clemente is the answer! These are short term, meaningful projects that gives everyone a sense of being a part of making a great City even better.

Dr. Patricia Drown, Team Leader, San Clemente Presbyterian Church

The Shoreline Church is excited to be taking part in Love San Clemente this year!  We love that we have the opportunity to show the city some love in some really needful ways.  Many people from our church will be working together with their small group, so groups of 10 or more people who have been meeting for Bible Study will now be able to turn their studies into service projects!  ‘Love’ is truly a verb and we are ready to get into action.

George Hulse, The Shoreline Church

“Love San Clemente has been an continual inspiration to participate in over the years. It’s so nice to get out into the community and meet new neighbors and help each other out a bit.”

Ron Sukut, Cornerstone Community Church

“Love San Clemente is a week long opportunity to spread Christ’s love and blessings through bite-sized services projects benefiting our San Clemente community and creating strong bonds between local churches and community volunteers“.

Suzanne Ansari, Community Resource Center San Clemente

“The act of service; members of Love San Clemente coming to our neighborhood from the outside to help us clean it up means allot to us on Calle Del Comercio,”

Cory Scurlock, Trestles Community Outreach
